Sheikh Rashid calls for judicial commission or immediate sentencing amidst May 9 probe

Sheikh Rashid hints at early elections

Awami Muslim League (AML) Chief and former federal minister Sheikh Rashid has demanded the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9, or he insists on “immediate sentencing” in the cases where he is nominated as an accused.

Addressing the media outside the court, Rashid expressed frustration over the prolonged legal proceedings, citing continuous delays and harassment endured over the past two years.

Accusing authorities of raiding his residence, abducting children, and confiscating valuables and money, Rashid criticised the state of justice in the country, labelling it a farce. He reiterated his demand for the formation of a judicial commission on May 9 or swift sentencing.

Asserting that there is no substantial evidence against him and his associates, Rashid stated that he would find solace in punishment if found guilty.

Expressing uncertainty about meeting incarcerated former premier Imran Khan during the next court appearance, Rashid criticised the current government, likening it to a dysfunctional vehicle.

Referring to recent protests in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) against the alleged failure of the regional government to implement an agreement promising economic relief, Rashid warned of similar protests in Pakistan.

On April 24, Rashid filed three constitutional petitions seeking acquittal due to insufficient evidence in the cases related to the May 9 incidents. The court accepted his petitions for a hearing, issued a police notice, and adjourned the proceedings until May 29.
