BIRMINGHAM: On the sixth day of the Commonwealth Games, Pakistan registered its name on the medal table as Nooh Dastagir Butt and Shah Hussain Shah won gold and bronze medal respectively. Nooh won the first gold medal for Pakistan in weight lifting, 109kg category, while Shah won third place in judo, 90kg category.

Pakistan’s wait for a medal was ended by Shah when he defeated Thomas Laszlo Breyytenbach in the bronze medal match, played at the Coventry Stadium. He won by ippon and wrapped the fight in less than three minutes. Shah is the son of legendary Pakistani boxer Hussain Shah and previously won a silver medal in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

After Pakistan won its first medal, Butt bagged the first gold medal for the country. He lifted 170kg in the first attempt, followed by 173kg in the second attempt and 175kg in his final lift. Nooh continued the breathtaking performance in the clean and jerk category by lifting a total of 405kg. Nooh became the second weightlifter from Pakistan to win gold for Pakistan.

Earlier, In the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Shujauddin Malik won first place in the 85kg category.

Pakistan has some hopes left to qualify for the semi-finals in hockey after the men in green won their first game in Group A. Pakistan defeated Scotland by 3-2, courtesy of a deciding goal by Rooman in the 55th minute.
