ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has disposed of the petition seeking the annulment of the February 8 general elections, moved by an individual named Ali Khan, here on Wednesday. The court announced its verdict after the individual failed to appear for the second consecutive session of the hearing.
The petition had sought a reelection within 30 days time under the supervision of the judiciary “to ensure fairness, transparency and accountability”. Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa was briefed by the additional attorney-general that the individual was an ex-military man. According to media reports, the individual in question had been subject to a court-martial back in 2012.
CJP Isa read out the email sent to the court by the petitioner who had excused himself from the hearing on grounds of being out of the country. The CJP remarked that the petitioner was a strange man whose only motivation behind the filing of the petition was pulling off a publicity stunt.
The court disposed off the petition and the petitioner has also been fined Rs500,000 by the three-member bench.
