Rahul Dravid to step down as India coach following T20 World Cup

As the highly anticipated T20 World Cup 2024 approaches, India’s cricket fraternity received what had been a long expected news. Rahul Dravid has announced his departure from his role as the team’s coach.

Dravid, who has helmed the coaching responsibilities for nearly three years, confirmed that he will step down from his position following the conclusion of the upcoming tournament.

Speaking to reporters ahead of India’s inaugural match against Ireland in New York on Wednesday, the 51-year-old expressed his decision not to seek a renewal of his contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which has been publicly advertised since the previous month.

“This will be my final stint as coach,” stated Dravid, reflecting on his tenure. “Given the demanding schedules and my current life circumstances, I believe it’s best not to pursue reapplication for the role.”

Despite bidding farewell to the coaching realm, Dravid conveyed his deep affection for the role, describing it as a “truly special” experience. Having assumed the coaching mantle from Ravi Shastri after the 2021 T20 World Cup, Dravid acknowledged the forthcoming tournament as his last opportunity to secure a global trophy for India, a feat the team has been striving for since the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Under Dravid’s guidance, India showcased commendable performances, reaching the finals of the World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup last year. Despite falling short against Australia on both occasions, Dravid commended the team’s efforts, emphasising their competitiveness and resilience on the global stage.

Reflecting on India’s upcoming campaign, Dravid expressed optimism, highlighting the team’s impressive performances in recent tournaments. He cited the World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup as testament to India’s calibre, underscoring their competitiveness against the world’s best teams.
