PTI plans parliamentary protest alongside opposition allies

Barrister Gohar says PTI’s letter to IMF won’t hurt country

ISLAMABAD: In a strategic shift, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced plans for a parliamentary protest alongside opposition allies rather than opting for disruptive measures. Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, PTI’s chairman, emphasised this stance during a press briefing here on Wednesday.

Highlighting ongoing discussions with various opposition parties including Majlis Wahdat Muslimeen, PkMAP led by Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Jamaat-i-Islami, BNP-Mengal, and JUI-F under Fazlur Rehman’s leadership, Khan disclosed plans for post-Eidul Fitr protests.

When questioned about the protest strategy, Khan clarified that the PTI wouldn’t resort to sit-ins, boycotts, or mass resignations, opting instead to maintain a presence in parliament despite contesting the legitimacy of the current government’s mandate.

Expressing concerns over electoral integrity, Khan stated, “It is everyone’s demand that elections should never be rigged. The people vote for someone and someone else comes to power, this shouldn’t happen.”

Addressing potential obstacles, Khan assured that protests would be conducted peacefully and within designated areas with official consent, adopting an “on and off” approach across the nation.

Responding to inquiries about allowing the incumbent government to complete its term, Khan expressed the desire for all governments to serve their full tenure but emphasised the absence of a legitimate mandate for the current administration.

The PTI’s shift towards parliamentary protests signifies a nuanced approach to opposition politics, aiming to address grievances while upholding democratic processes and principles.
