On the occasion of International Women’s Day, political leaders of Pakistan highlighted the need to support and empower women in all sectors. President of Pakistan, foreign minister, and ministry for climate change came forward to highlight the importance of women in different sectors of society. The leaders also discussed the need to curb violence against women.

WOMEN NEED TO BE EMPOWERED SOCIALLY AND ECONOMICALLY
President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi said that we need to empower women at both social and economical levels. In his statement issued on the occasion of International Women’s Day on Twitter, President Alvi reiterated his commitment to providing equal opportunities for the progress and advancement of women.

The President also showed concern over the lesser representation of women in tech, education, and governance sectors. He expressed that efforts need to be accelerated to improve access of women to digital technologies.

CONDEMN THE CRIME & VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister of Pakistan Bilawal Bhutto Zardari demanded a monitoring mechanism to prevent crimes against women in foreign-occupied territories.

Bilawal opined that foreign suppression and occupation resulted in the most serious atrocities against girls and women. Bilawal expressed his views during a high-level debate held at the United Nations Security Council. He is on a five-day visit to New York. His statement came in alignment with International Women’s Day.

The foreign minister said that the issue needs to be addressed vigorously and frontally, or else the peace & security strategy for women will remain incomplete.

AVOID BIASES ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman requested all citizens to avoid prejudices and biases related to IWD.

In her video statement on Twitter, Sherry Rehman said that International Women’s Day should be about congratulating women across the world, including the brave and hardworking women of Pakistan.

Sherry Rehman said that IWD is a symbol of women’s struggle. She added that the purpose of celebrating this day is to encourage women and recognise their rights and spread awareness about their equal status as they make up 49 per cent of Pakistan’s population.

Sherry Rahman stated that women are the backbone of every sector like the family system, society, country and economy. She highlighted the need for women to receive health, education and other basic facilities. The federal minister pointed out that today women are demanding their human, constitutional and legal rights.
