In response to recent clashes and protests in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken decisive action, approving the immediate provision of Rs23 billion to the region. The unrest stemmed from demands made by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which sought fair electricity pricing, subsidised wheat flour, and an end to elite privileges.
The tensions escalated when around 70 activists were arrested to prevent a long march planned by the JAAC. This led to serious clashes, including a “shutter-down strike” in Dadyal and violent confrontations in Muzaffarabad. Tragically, the clashes resulted in the death of one police official and left over 90 others injured.
Despite attempts at negotiation, an agreement between the JAAC and the AJK government remained elusive, prompting the resumption of protests. President Asif Ali Zardari and PM Shehbaz pledged to address the protesters’ demands, emphasising dialogue and restraint from all parties.
In response to the ongoing unrest, government offices and educational institutions were closed. PM Shehbaz convened a special meeting in Islamabad, attended by AJK PM Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, local ministers, and political leaders. Federal ministers and coalition party leaders participated as well, conducting a detailed review of the situation.
The decision to allocate funds was met with appreciation from AJK leaders and meeting participants, signalling a commitment to address the grievances and restore peace in the region.
