BAGHDAD: Iraq’s Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi escaped unharmed in a failed assassination attempt on his life here on Sunday. A drone tried to attack his official residence, his office said.

Kadhemi has been at the helm of affairs since May 2020. The attack resulted in two of the bodyguards sustaining injuries. Meanwhile, the Iraqi premier has urged the people to remain calm “for the good of Iraq”.

In a video statement shared on Twitter, the prime minister said that his residence was targetted in a “cowardly assault”. He also stated, “Cowardly drones and missiles don’t build nations.”

The attack has officially been declared the PM’s office as “unsuccessful assassination attempt”.
