BCCI suggests India’s possible participation in Pakistan’s Champions Trophy 2025

Heightened security measures for India-Pakistan T20 World Cup match amidst threat reports

BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla has indicated that Team India might travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025, contingent upon receiving government approval. Shukla made these remarks during the Uttar Pradesh Premier League players’ auction on Sunday, emphasising the necessity of government authorisation for any such travel plans.

“Government authorisation is essential for the Indian cricket team’s travel to Pakistan for the tournament,” Shukla stated, addressing the current uncertainty surrounding the visit.

In light of potential consequences, Shukla also commented on Pakistan’s possible withdrawal from the 2026 T20 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted in India and Sri Lanka. “Pakistan can say whatever it wants about coming to India during the 2026 World Cup, but we are only waiting for the approval of the Indian government,” he remarked, suggesting that Pakistan is free to express its stance.

A senior BCCI official acknowledged the possibility of retaliation from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) if India decides against travelling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. “Of course, we expect retaliation. If we don’t travel to Pakistan, they will threaten to boycott the Asia Cup. But the PCB should understand that it’s not in the BCCI’s hands. Sending a team to a foreign country requires the Indian government’s permission. So far, we have had dialogues regarding the Champions Trophy, but we haven’t had any positive outcomes,” the official explained.

The Champions Trophy, set to be held in Pakistan from February to March 2025, has been a subject of debate since its announcement. Reports indicate that the BCCI has requested the ICC to either relocate the tournament from Pakistan or arrange India’s matches at a neutral venue. In response, the PCB has demanded written proof from the BCCI, confirming the Indian government’s refusal to permit the team’s travel, particularly if security concerns are cited.

According to the schedule, the Champions Trophy will commence in Karachi on February 19 and conclude with the final in Lahore on March 9, with several matches planned in Rawalpindi. A reserve day for the final is scheduled on March 10 in case of inclement weather.
