Army chief vows justice on first anniversary of May 9 unrest

General Syed Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has reaffirmed the commitment to uphold justice for the perpetrators of the May 9 incident, ensuring accountability within the confines of the law. His remarks come as Pakistan commemorates the first anniversary of the unrest that shook the nation.

During his visit to Lahore Garrison on Thursday, General Munir paid tribute to the fallen heroes of the Pak Armed Forces, laying a floral wreath at the Martyrs’ Monument.

Addressing garrison officers and soldiers, General Munir commended their unwavering dedication and professionalism, highlighting their pivotal role in safeguarding national interests.

The COAS emphasised the military’s resilience in the face of provocations that undermine constitutional order, cautioning against misinterpreting patience as weakness. He underscored the persistent threat posed by digital terrorism, stressing the need for unity to thwart divisive agendas propagated through misinformation and propaganda.

Reflecting on the May 9 unrest, General Munir condemned the orchestrated violence targeting state symbols and national unity, denouncing attempts to distort the narrative to implicate the state. He reiterated the army’s unwavering stance against compromise with those responsible for orchestrating the dark chapter in Pakistan’s history.

General Munir reassured army personnel that the sacrifices of martyrs and the sanctity of the institution will be safeguarded, emphasising zero tolerance for disrespect towards them.

In a symbolic gesture towards national resilience, General Munir inaugurated the Jinnah Library at Lahore Garrison, signalling a defiance against destructive forces by fostering educational initiatives over remnants of turmoil.
