Disturbing footage capturing an armed officer kicking and stamping on a man’s head during an incident at Manchester Airport has gone viral, igniting widespread concern and prompting an official investigation.
The video, recorded on Wednesday afternoon (July 24) and rapidly shared across social media, shows dramatic scenes that have amassed thousands of views. In response, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and removed one officer from operational duties, according to BBC News.
Incident details
Authorities were called to Terminal 2 due to a reported altercation among members of the public. The situation escalated into what police described as a “violent assault” on officers attempting to make an arrest. The footage shows a male officer aiming a taser at a man lying on the ground, reportedly a British Pakistani. Onlookers’ shouts can be heard as the officer proceeds to kick and stamp on the man’s head.
The chaotic scene continues as another individual yells “move back,” while a female officer brandishes her taser towards other bystanders. Multiple voices plead, “stop kicking people,” and expletives fill the air as officers surround the man on the ground.
In another shocking moment, an officer points his taser at a different man, who is kneeling with arms raised, before kicking him as well.
Police and public response
Following the release of the video, police issued a statement revealing that four men were arrested on suspicion of affray and assaulting emergency service workers. Reports indicate that a female officer suffered a broken nose, and several other officers required hospital treatment.
Assistant Chief Constable Wasim Chaudhry addressed the incident, stating, “We know that a film of an incident at Manchester Airport that is circulating widely shows an event that is truly shocking, and that people are rightly extremely concerned about. The use of such force in an arrest is an unusual occurrence and one that we understand creates alarm.”
Investigation and next steps
The IOPC confirmed it had received the referral from GMP and would assess the situation to determine further action. The investigation aims to address the serious conduct concerns raised by the footage and ensure accountability.
