The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning of significant monsoon activity across upper and central Pakistan this week, forecasting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that could disrupt daily routines and cause extensive environmental impacts.
Strong monsoon currents to hit Northern and Central regions
In a statement, the PMD reported that strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal will begin penetrating the northern and central regions of the country from July 3. This weather pattern is expected to bring substantial rainfall and thunderstorms to several areas, potentially leading to severe weather conditions.
Regional forecasts
Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Surrounding Areas
The PMD has indicated that Neelum Valley and Muzaffarabad are likely to experience rain and thunderstorms, with heavy to very heavy falls expected from July 3 to July 7. These areas may see occasional severe weather gaps, heightening the risk of flash floods and landslides.
Punjab and Islamabad
Cities such as Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Lahore are forecasted to undergo a similar pattern of rain and thunderstorms. The intensity of these weather events may vary, but occasional heavy falls are expected through July 7. Urban flooding in these areas is a significant concern.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is preparing for potentially isolated very heavy falls amid general thunderstorms, particularly in regions such as Peshawar and Kohat, starting from July 3. The heavy rainfall increases the risk of flash flooding in streams and rivers.
Balochistan and Sindh
While the majority of Balochistan and Sindh will continue to experience hot and humid conditions, eastern Balochistan and parts of Sindh, including Umarkot and Sukkur, are expected to receive rain and thundershowers starting from July 4. These areas should be on alert for sudden weather changes.
Gilgit-Baltistan
The forecast for Gilgit-Baltistan indicates partly cloudy to cloudy conditions, with rainfall expected in areas such as Skardu and Gilgit during the week. This could lead to localised disruptions and potential landslides in mountainous regions.
Advisories and warnings
The PMD has issued several advisories in anticipation of the heavy monsoon activity:
- Flash Floods: There is a high likelihood of flash floods in streams of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and other areas, particularly from July 4 to 7.
- Urban Flooding: Major cities, including Lahore and Peshawar, may experience urban flooding due to heavy downpours.
- Landslides: Hilly regions such as Murree and the Galliyat are at risk of landslides, which could disrupt travel and endanger lives.
- Structural Risks: The anticipated heavy rainfall poses risks to weak structures and could severely impact farming and travel activities.
Precautionary measures
Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay updated with weather reports and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. The PMD recommends securing outdoor items, preparing for potential power outages, and avoiding travel during severe weather conditions. Farmers are also urged to take protective measures for their crops and livestock.
The PMD’s forecast underscores the need for vigilance and preparedness as the monsoon season intensifies, bringing both the promise of much-needed rainfall and the threat of severe weather impacts.
