ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that news of applying ‘amendments’ to the Pakistan Army Act (PAA) were rumours and media hyping them was an uncalled-for act. He added that the federal government had not considered making major changes to the PAA. Asif further briefed that the Supreme Court of Pakistan demanded to review the PAA’s clauses in CP 39/2019 judgement.
Media hype over amendments in Pakistan Army Act is uncalled for. Government is not considering any major changes in the said Act. SCP had demanded review of relevant clauses of PAA in its judgement in CP 39/2019 which shall be complied with in due course.

Earlier, several news reports had claimed that the government could amend the army act through which a candidate could be retained with a simple notification. The reports also added that the amendments would be presented in parliament for legislation after passing through the Cabinet Committee.
Speculations and rumours are rife amid the appointment of a new Chief of Army Staff.
