Residents of Karachi are experiencing relief from the recent sweltering heatwave as a low-pressure system moves from Indian Gujarat to Oman. The Chief Meteorologist, Sardar Sarfraz, announced that typical July weather has returned to the city, with expectations of light rain and drizzle tonight. He also forecasted that the weather will remain cloudy in the coming days.
“The weather is expected to remain cloudy, with a possibility of light rain and drizzle in the evening and night,” reported Sarfraz.
The sea breeze, which had been halted due to the low-pressure system in Gujarat, has now resumed in the port city, further contributing to the respite from the intense heat.
Upcoming monsoon rains
In addition to the current weather relief, Karachi is bracing for another spell of monsoon rains expected to start on July 30. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Sindh has issued warnings about the potential for heavy rainfall, which may lead to flash floods in various areas.
The PDMA has advised residents to be cautious, particularly regarding loose structures such as billboards, electrical poles, solar panels, hoardings, and under-construction buildings during the rains. They have emphasised the risks of urban flooding in low-lying areas of Sindh due to the anticipated heavy downpours.
Precautionary measures
The PDMA Sindh has also highlighted that the monsoon rains from July 21 to July 27 could cause flash or urban flooding in municipalities, local nullahs, streams, and river tributaries. The public is urged to follow government-issued guidelines to ensure safety during this period.
