ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has rejected Information Minister Ataullah Tarar’s accusations of the party urging the European Union to revoke Pakistan’s status as GSP+. Tarar had addressed a press conference yesterday in which he had hurled, what the PTI calls “baseless” allegations.
In a brutal double blow to the newly elected government’s and Tarar’s credibility, the European Union has denied being contacted by the PTI over the allegations of the latter asking the former to revoke Pakistan’s GSP+ status.
Speaking to Dawn, the Press Officer for the EU Delegation said that they had not received any such request from the PTI. Pakistan has been a beneficiary of the GSP+ status for the last 10 years.
It allows the developing countries to promote adherence to human rights, labor rights, environmental preservation, and effective governance by offering trade incentives such as lowered tariffs for their exports to the EU market.
