In a recent press conference held in Rawalpindi, Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Maj-Gen Ahmed Sharif, addressed critical issues concerning national security and Pakistan’s relations with Afghanistan. Maj-Gen Sharif highlighted various challenges faced by the country, including terrorism from across the border, tensions with Afghanistan, and threats from India.
The conference, just two days before May 9th, marked a significant date in Pakistan’s political history. Maj-Gen Sharif emphasised the importance of addressing the events of May 9th, highlighting the need for accountability and justice for those involved in attacking military installations and inciting violence against state institutions.
Regarding the recent terrorist attacks originating from Afghanistan, Maj-Gen Sharif condemned the actions and emphasised that Pakistan is taking necessary measures to address the situation. He stated that evidence suggests the planning of recent terrorist activities, including the attack on Chinese engineers in Bisham, was orchestrated from across the border in Afghanistan.
Despite Pakistan’s efforts to maintain peace and cooperate with the Afghan interim government, terrorist organisations such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) continue to operate from Afghan soil, posing a threat to Pakistan’s security. Maj-Gen Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
The conference also touched upon Pakistan’s relations with India, highlighting multiple ceasefire violations and airspace violations by Indian forces along the eastern border. Maj-Gen Sharif emphasised Pakistan’s readiness to defend its sovereignty and respond to any aggression from India.
Additionally, Maj-Gen Sharif addressed the issue of repatriating illegal Afghan nationals residing in Pakistan. He explained that the decision to repatriate these individuals was made in the best interest of Pakistan, considering the economic burden and deteriorating law and order situation caused by their presence.
