Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has categorically dismissed claims made by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan regarding alleged pressure on former prime minister Imran Khan to accept a ‘deal’.
In an interview with Independent Urdu published on Wednesday, Asif refuted the assertions, stating, “There is no truth to claims of pressuring Imran Khan to come to the negotiating table.”
Gohar Khan’s remarks outside the Parliament House on Tuesday had stirred controversy, initially denying any suggestion of pressure for a deal with Imran Khan. However, he hinted at perceived pressures arising from Imran Khan’s detention, insinuating attempts to coerce him into accepting a deal.
In response to Gohar’s statements, Asif criticised PTI’s motives, alleging that such assertions were aimed at maintaining relevance. He referenced previous statements from credible PTI members denying any ongoing negotiations or contact for a deal.
Asif also addressed the relationship between the PTI-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and the Centre, emphasising the need for mutual cooperation and avoiding initiatives that could strain relations. He recalled a cordial meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, stressing the importance of maintaining a positive atmosphere.
Regarding the possibility of imposing governor rule in KP, Asif urged political forces to steer clear of such scenarios, emphasising the importance of dialogue and constructive engagement to resolve any issues.
