ISLAMABAD: With Pakistan struggling on the economic front leaving the citizens already short on food choices, it seems a storm is brewing in the poultry industry where the traders have warned that the chicken meat could cost more than beef in future if the feed crisis did not end.
According to media reports, live broiler chicken is already being sold for Rs370/kg in the federal capital. It is speculated that the chicken meat could cross the Rs800/kg mark, leaving behind the prices of the red meat.
The chicken prices have been on a rise since October due to the insistence of the custom authorities on not releasing the GMO soybean which is mostly imported from the United States and Brazil. At the time of the filing of this report, nine shipments remain stuck at port on the pretext of several legal issues.
