The volcano Fuego, one of the most active volcanoes in Central America, erupted on Sunday and caused a brief closure of the airport and highway in Guatemala city. The ash and lava, resultantly, got spread over 22 miles (35 kilometres) towards Guatemala. The volcano, situated 16 kilometres from Antigua, erupts after every four years. The 2018 eruption killed 215 people, and hundreds of people went missing.
The residents of the areas have prepared themselves in case of a situation where they have to evacuate the area. Locals have collected necessary items like food, water, medicine, and flashlights. However, no announcement of evacuation has been made, and authorities said they are monitoring the situation closely.
So far, two incoming flights have been diverted, and roads that connect central and southern parts of Guatemala are closed.
