In a significant development, sources close to the ruling PML-N and the PPP reveal that a power-sharing agreement is on the verge of being finalised, paving the way for PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s return as Pakistan’s Foreign Minister.
Insiders privy to the negotiations suggest that Bilawal is poised to join Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s cabinet, assuming the role of foreign minister, marking his second tenure in this crucial diplomatic position.
Recent discussions among top leadership from both parties have reportedly led to a mutual understanding, with Bilawal, initially hesitant, now agreeing to reprise his role as foreign minister.
Efforts are underway to iron out the finer details and the timing of PPP’s formal integration into the federal cabinet.
It’s indicated that PM Shehbaz aims for PPP’s inclusion before the presentation of the upcoming budget in early June, although the exact timeline remains uncertain.
While the current Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is slated to transition to the role of Deputy Premier, preparations are in motion for Bilawal’s assumption of the top diplomatic post.
Dar’s office is reportedly being arranged at the PM’s Office, from where he will operate once he vacates the Foreign Office for Bilawal.
Sources suggest Dar’s preference for the finance ministry, but his appointment as Deputy Premier could see him oversee economic policies once more.
PPP views Bilawal’s return to the Foreign Office favourably, citing the significant boost it provided to his and the party’s profile during his previous tenure.
However, the ultimate decision regarding PPP’s cabinet participation rests with the party’s Central Executive Committee.
Following the February 8 elections, PPP backed PML-N’s bid to form the federal government but abstained from cabinet participation initially, with an understanding to join later stages.
Having fulfilled its commitments, including provincial governor appointments and securing key constitutional positions, PML-N is now poised to welcome PPP into the federal cabinet.
Sources within the Foreign Office express confidence in Bilawal’s capabilities, highlighting his successful stint as Foreign Minister before the elections.
