University of Karachi suspends Assistant Professor on harassment

The administration of the University of Karachi has suspended an Assistant Professor of the Urdu department on the complaint of harassment from a female student.

According to the notification issued by the registrar of the university, Professor Dr Abdul Waheed, the teacher of the Urdu department was immediately suspended after taking action under the “University of Karachi Employees (Efficiency and Discipline)”, after the recommendation of the Harassment Committee of the UoK & the approval of the Vice-Chancellor.

As per the decision, the suspension will continue until further notice by the Protection Committee against Harassment of Women. During this time, the suspended professor will be bound not to have any kind of contact with the complaining student.

The university administration received complaints against the teacher of the Urdu department through security agencies along with some evidence. The anti-harassment committee of the university took immediate action and suspended the teacher in light of provided evidence in a meeting held yesterday.

The victim student and her family had lodged a formal complaint with the security agencies.
