Unclear picture of LG polls; Election Commission wants more time to finalise results

It’s been over 24 hours, but still, there is no clear picture of the local government (LG) elections held in Karachi and Hyderabad on January 15, 2023. So far, the Election Commission of Pakistan has not issued a final result. Several reports from the media claim that Pakistan Peoples Party is leading the LG polls in Hyderabad and Karachi.

According to unofficial results, PPP has a lead in 46 Union Councils, Jamat-e-Islami in 17, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 13, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in three, and Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam (JUI-F) in two. Tehreek-e-Labbaik (TLP) & independent candidates secured one seat each.

Jamaat-e-Islami leader Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman claimed that his party had secured a simple majority in the local government elections of Karachi. While addressing a press conference, he said that the people of Karachi supported Jamaat-e-Islami and the party would win around 100 seats. Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman had shown reservations about the results’ procedure and pointed out the possibility of forcefully changing the outcome in many places.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) tried to provide an explanation for the delayed results. Sindh Election Commissioner Ejaz Anwar Chauhan, in a press statement, said it would take time to finalise the results as it is a complicated procedure.
