Shehbaz Sharif set to become 23rd prime minister of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: On Monday, the National Assembly session will elect the new prime minister of Pakistan after the historic event of the successful no-confidence vote against former prime minister Imran Khan.

President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Shehbaz Sharif and Vice-President Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Shah Mahmood Qureshi stand as the two contenders vying to be the 23rd prime minister of Pakistan. Sharif, however, is most likely to be elected as the new premier.

PML-N president had meetings with allies, including Pakistan Peoples Party and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam, to finalise the strategy amid the current political conditions. Sources claim that in the new setup Naveed Qamar of PPP will have the position of Speaker National Assembly, representative of PML-N Rana Sanaullah will get the duty of Interior Minister, and Marriyum Aurangzeb will serve as the Information Minister.

Meanwhile, Khan has told all the MNAs to attend today’s session and vote for Shah Mahmood Qureshi for the prime ministerial post. Voting for the prime minister will take place at 2:00pm in National Assembly.

Earlier, PTI said if PML-N won, the party would face a tough time from PTI. Supporters of PTI took to the streets of Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, and Sialkot to register strong protests against the alleged foreign conspiracy that led to the ouster of Khan.
