Qavi Khan’s dream to direct movies and revive film industry remained unfulfilled

LAHORE: On Sunday, the Pakistani entertainment industry bore another major loss as veteran actor Qavi Khan passed away in Canada after battling Cancer. The actor left the world at the age of 80 after serving the Pakistan entertainment industry for over five decades.

A CAREER THAT SPANNED ACROSS RADIO, THEATRE, TV, AND CINEMA
Qavi Khan hailed from Peshawar and started his career as a child star for Radio Pakistan. His television career began with Pakistan Television, and he made entry into the film industry in 1964. Qavi acted in multiple successful dramas like Lahore Gate, Andhera Ujala, Fishar, Mutthi Bhar Mitti, Betiyan, Cinderella, and Dure Shahwar.

He acted in multiple Pakistani films like Naag Mani, Muhabbat Zindagi Hai, Sarfrosh, Kalay Chor, Zameen Aasman, Pari and Chand Suraj. In the world of theatre, Qavi became a recognised name with his role Ghalib which he played at the Pakistan National Council of Arts.

AWARDS AND ACCOLADES
The government of Pakistan and entertainment bodies honoured Qavi Khan with multiple awards for his contribution to the entertainment industry. During his prolonged career, Qavi received three Nigar Awards, the Presidential Award, Pride of Performance, Sitara-i-Imtiaz, and the Lux Style Lifetime Achievement Award.

DREAM TO WORK AS DIRECTOR FOR PAKISTAN FILM INDUSTRY
Qavi was among the few artists who experienced the gradual decline of the Pakistan film industry. He dreamt to take up the seat of director and make films to help the film sector. However, his simple personality could not handle the business tactics required to excel in the field.

Media reports stated that Qavi Khan was unable to deal with exhibitors and distributors. For his dream of filmmaking, Qavi lost a substantial amount of money. Hence his wish to become recognised as director remained unfulfilled.

Hum Television drama, Meri Shehzadi, proved to be the last project of Qavi Khan. He was playing the character of Urwa Hocane’s grandfather. However, he left the project after a few episodes as his health started to deteriorate.
