Punjab govt submits report to SC detailing hate speech cases

ISLAMABAD: The Punjab government has submitted a report on the rights of minorities to the Supreme Court. The report elaborated on the registered cases against hate speech and the convicted culprits.

According to the report, 99 cases were registered by the law enforcement authorities since 2015. A total of 101 people were arrested, while security departments convicted 62 people along with acquitting 11 people.
Stats of 2016 showed that law agencies registered 44 cases, detained 44 people, convicted 37 suspects and acquitted seven.

In 2017, eight cases were registered in which nine people got arrested, seven convicted, and one secured a release. In 2018, two cases were filed resulting in two arrests. Out of them, one was convicted, and the other was released.

In 2019 and 2020, collectively 28 cases were filed, two got the clean chit, and 11 people were arrested and found guilty. Meanwhile in 2021, of the 12 cases registered, one person was found guilty.

In addition to this, 44 websites were blocked by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
