PTI-led SIC dealt blow by PHC; rules in favour of ECP on reserved seats plea

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court has rejected the plea filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-led Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) which had sought the court’s assistance with the Election Commission of Pakistan’s ruling of denying it the reserved seats.

Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim led a 5-member bench earlier today which ruled in favour of the ECP on grounds that the SIC had not won any seat at the general elections. The ECP lawyer Sikander Basheer Momand had argued that the SIC was a political party and not a parliamentary party.

The decision has dealt a serious blow to the PTI which had hoped to seek some relief from the Peshawar High Court. The ECP’s decision of awarding the PTI’s share reserved seats to other parties has benefitted the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) the most as it has become the single largest party in the parliament with 123 seats in the national assembly.
