PM Imran criticises US for ‘man-made crisis’ in Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan made no effort to hide his criticism of the United States, which, according to him, has created a man-made crisis in Afghanistan and is now worsening it further by freezing its assets.

He was speaking here on Tuesday at a ceremony after Pakistan successfully hosted the meeting of Organisation of Islamic Conference.

“A man-made crisis is being created despite knowing that it can be averted if (Afghanistan’s) accounts (in the US) are unfrozen and liquidity is put into their banking system,” said the prime minister.

According to media reports, approximately $9.5 billion worth of Afghan assets in the US banks have been frozen by Washington ever since the Taliban took over the reins of the government in Kabul.

The prime minister urged the world leaders to act timely if the crisis was to be averted since the time was of the essence. The Pakistani leadership has repeatedly asked the world leaders to listen to the plights of the Afghan citizens and do everything to make sure their grievances are addressed.

The Pakistani government has warned the global leadership time and again that the failure to do so could have catastrophic affects for the whole region and could result in the rise of terrorism.
