Paving way for Ishaq Dar as Interim PM: Election Act to be amended to empower Interim govt for making important decisions

Paving way for Ishaq Dar as Interim PM

Islamabad: As it’s evident that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have agreed to appoint Ishaq Dar as interim PM, Dar is all set to make major amendments to Election Act 2017 that would give the power to interim government for making important decisions. Note that PPP and PML-N do not have a political alliance for competing in elections but are taking all decisions together for upcoming elections.

The amendments in the act would enable the caretaker government & Ishaq Dar to act like an elected government to deal with international affairs, provincial issues and fiscal matters.

While talking to a private news channel, Ishaq Dar said that section 230 of the election law would be amended. He said that the step is necessary as it would not be appropriate to spend three months of the nation on day-to-day affairs.

Despite the sources claiming the appointment of Ishaq Dar as interim PM, the Finance Minister said it’s premature to announce who would hold the office. However, Ishaq pointed out that he has fulfilled his duty to the best of his capability whenever given the responsibility.

Electoral Reforms Bill

Sources claim that noteworthy changes would take place in the Election Act 2017 that would enhance the powers of the caretaker government for taking important decisions regarding national significance.

The new reforms would strengthen the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). It is anticipated that Law and Justice Minister Senator Muhammad Azam Nazir Tarar would table the bill in the National Assembly after the approval of the federal cabinet.

The federal government has received recommendations from the committee headed by former NA speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja will also forward his recommendations.

After the changes are approved, the scrutiny of the candidates would become more strict.
