Pakistan drops to 140 in Corruption Perception Index

Transparency International has placed Pakistan at the 140th spot on its Corruption Perception Index (CPI) out of 180 countries. The CPI is an annual report that ranks the countries based on their level of corruption in public sectors.

The report is a setback to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf as it came in power with the agenda of eradicating corruption. In 2018, Pakistan had the 117th position with a score of 33/100 and 126th in 2020 with 31/100. Whereas this year, the score dropped to 28/100.

Vice-Chair Transparency International-Pakistan Nasira Iqbal said that the lack of rule of law was one of the main factors responsible for Pakistan’s low performance on CPI. She added that India and Bangladesh had retained their score in the 2021 CPI.

This year’s report has placed New Zealand, Finland, and Denmark as the best performing countries with a perception score of 88. Sweden, Singapore, and Norway scored 85. Afghanistan (16), Venezuela (14), Somalia (13), and Syria (13) were the worst-performing countries.
