Pakistan reported 79 cases of Omicron hitherto

ISLAMABAD: The National Institute of Health Islamabad put out a tweet on Tuesday evening to announce that Pakistan had reported 75 confirmed cases of the new Omicron variant thus far. The first case was reported in the country on December 13 in Karachi.

According to the statement, of the total 75 confirmed cases, 33 were detected in Karachi, 17 in Islamabad, and 13 in Lahore. The statement added that 12 of the confirmed cases were directly related to international travel. Meanwhile, the federal capital reported four confirmed cases of the new variant yesterday, taking the total number of the new variant to 79 in the country.

“All government-approved Covid-19 vaccines available in Pakistan remain highly effective at preventing severe disease and hospitalisation. The government urges everyone to get both doses of Covid-19 vaccine as well as the booster dose as per the eligibility criteria and process,” read the statement.

Meanwhile, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) announced the latest numbers for Covid-19 in the country. A total of 39,739 tests were conducted in Pakistan in the last 24 hours, of which, 348 turned out to be positive, recording a test positivity rate of 0.87 per cent. Six more people lost their lives to Covid and 648 remain in critical care.
