Magic number of 124; PPP and PTI seeking alliance of Jamaat-e-Islami for mayor position in Karachi

Since no party was able to achieve the magic number of 124 seats in the local government elections of Karachi, the mayor of Karachi cannot be chosen without two parties joining hands. Pakistan People’s Party(PPP) has sent a clear invitation to Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) to ally with it. While talking at the press conference, the Labour and Human Resources Minister of Sindh Saeed Ghani said that PPP is willing to talk with JI.

PPP emerged victorious in 94 UCs, while JI remained second with 86 seats. Pakistan Tehreek-I-Insaf managed to secure 40 seats. JI’s performance in Karachi LG polls has made it clear that any party, whether PPP or PTI, who wants to form government in Karachi needs the alliance of Hafiz Naeem-Ur-Rehman.

Saeed Ghani said that the performance of JI has been surprising and the party won in constituencies where candidates of PPP were favourites. Earlier, PTI also reached out to the leader of JI Siraj-Ul-Haq and talked about the possibility of collaboration.

So far, JI has not responded to any party as they had reservations over the election process in multiple constituencies. Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah said that the provincial government would try its best to address the concerns of JI.
