Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, while talking to the BBC Urdu, has hinted at holding early elections prior to the appointment of the Army chief. Speaking to the BBC Urdu exclusively, Asif did not rule out the possibility of holding early elections.

He said that fresh elections could be held before November – the month in which the current Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa is set to retire. Asif accused former prime minister Imran Khan of wanting to protect his personal interests and said that it was also one of the reasons why he was sent packing.

When asked whether the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government would offer General Bajwa an extension, he said that Bajwa himself was not interested in seeking an extension.
