Karachi’s ‘feel-like’ temperature rises to 55°C

The city grappled with intense heat and humidity on Wednesday, as the maximum temperature soared to 37.1°C with a staggering 65 percent relative humidity. The combination of heat and moisture pushed the feels-like temperature to an oppressive 55°C, leaving residents struggling to cope with the extreme conditions.

Meteorological update

According to the Meteorological Department, the weather is expected to remain cloudy but hot and humid on Thursday. The forecast indicates that maximum temperatures will hover between 35°C and 37°C, maintaining the discomfort experienced by the populace.

Humidity levels are predicted to be particularly high, ranging from 70 to 80 per cent in the morning and 55 to 65pc in the evening. This persistent humidity will exacerbate the sensation of heat, making it feel significantly hotter than the actual temperature.

Impact on residents

The unrelenting heat and high humidity levels pose serious challenges for city residents, affecting daily activities and increasing health risks such as heat exhaustion and dehydration. Authorities are advising people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses.

Recommendations for coping

Residents are urged to:

  1. Stay Indoors: Limit outdoor activities, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
  2. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages.
  3. Wear Light Clothing: Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-coloured clothing to stay cool.
  4. Use Fans and Air Conditioning: Utilise fans and air conditioning to maintain a cooler indoor environment.
  5. Check on Vulnerable Populations: Ensure that children, the elderly, and pets are kept cool and hydrated.

As the city braces for another day of extreme weather, it is crucial for everyone to take necessary precautions to stay safe and healthy.
