On Friday, the England & Wales Cricket Board officially announced that star English batter Joe Root has resigned as England’s Test captain.
England had a difficult Test season as they lost The Ashes to arch-rivals Australia by 4-0 and recently had a setback against West Indies losing the series 1-0. In the past year, the English team lost 11 Test matches and five resulted in a draw. Root said that though the decision was challenging, he knew it was the right time to step down as the Test skipper.
The top English batter, across all formats, said he would look back on the tenure with pride.
Root has won the most number of Test matches for England as a captain with 27 memorable victories. Tom Harrison, Chief Executive ECB, acknowledged Root’s contribution as captain and called him an exceptional role model.
