Imran to serve as premier until caretaker prime minister is appointed

President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi has confirmed that Imran Khan will continue to serve as the Prime Minister of Pakistan following Article 224-A (4) of the Constitution. The official notification was released from the President’s office.

According to Article 224 (A), until a caretaker premier and chief minister are not appointed, the in-power prime minister and chief minister will continue their duties and are entitled to hold the office. The article further states that the caretaker prime minister has to be appointed with the agreement of the opposition and house leader.

Despite the Cabinet Secretariat’s notice, which stated “Mr Imran Khan Niazi ceased to hold the Office of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, with immediate effect,” Article 94 authorises the president to ask the prime minister to continue his duties till the successor takes over.
