Despite resistance from president, Cabinet Division denotifies Omar Sarfraz as Governor Punjab

Cabinet Division denotifies Omar Sarfraz as Governor Punjab

Lahore: The political crisis in Pakistan strengthens as the coalition government has denotified Governor Punjab Omar Sarfraz Cheema as Punjab’s governor. The notification was issued by the Cabinet Division last night, removing Omar from his position.

Earlier, the President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi had rejected the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to remove Mr Cheema from the governor’s post. According to the statement by Arif Alvi, Article 101-clause three states that a governor will hold the office till the president wants. It added that since there was no misconduct reported and no conviction was executed by the court: the governor shall continue his duties.

Omar Sarfraz Cheema had shown resentment over the political situation in Punjab and wrote a letter to Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa to intervene and resolve the political chaos in Punjab.

The Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, currently Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, will now serve as the acting governor of Punjab.
