Gen Asim Munir takes over as 17th Chief of Army Staff

RAWALPINDI: On Tuesday, General Qamar Javed Bajwa handed over the Pakistan Army command to the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir in an eminent ceremony at the General Headquarters (GHQ). Gen Bajwa has retired after serving as the COAS for six years. By taking over the command, Gen Asim Munir has become the 17th COAS.

Former military leadership, foreign dignitaries, and federal ministers attended the ceremony. Pak Army band performed various national songs, and a guard of honour was presented to Gen Bajwa by the Baloch regiment. Gen Bajwa also visited the Yadgar–e-Shuhda before the ceremony.

Gen Bajwa addressed the attendees and congratulated the newly appointed army chief. The former COAS said he has full faith that under the leadership of Asim Munir, army would attain more success, and the appointment would benefit Pakistan.

Gen Asim Munir had served as the head of Military Intelligence (MI) and Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI). In 2017, he was appointed as the Director-General of MI, and in 2018 he got the position of DG ISI. Before being chosen for the COAS position, Gen Asim Munir was serving as the Quarter Master at the General Headquarters (GHQ). He is the first COAS in the history of Pakistan who has previously headed the MI and ISI.
