Fazlur Rehman accuses govt of controlling electoral process

QUETTA: Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman accused the government of trying to control the electoral process before the next elections due in 18 months time. He was speaking at an Ulema convention here on Thursday.

He said that the country was no one’s property and would be run as per the Constitution and the wishes of its citizens. In a no holds barred speech, he called the election date of the incumbent government as “black day”, adding that parliament also witnessed the same yesterday.

The criticism comes in the wake of the new bills that were passed yesterday, much to the annoyance of the opposition, in parliament by the government and its allies. The bills allow the overseas Pakistanis to cast their votes in the upcoming elections and the usage of electronic voting machines in 2023.

The members of the opposition staged a walk out yesterday and said that the move was illegal, and the results of elections 2023 won’t be accepted.
