Faisal Vawda disqualified by ECP over concealment of dual nationality

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader and Senator Faisal Vawda has been disqualified by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in a case pertaining to the hiding of his dual nationality when he contested elections on a seat from Karachi back in 2018. The ECP announced the decision on Wednesday.

Vawda was ordered by the election watchdog to return all the benefits and salary received by him while holding the public office in two months time. The ECP also took back its notification of announcing the victory of Vawda as Senator last year, effectively nullifying the Senate polls.

As per the short order, his vote was also declared redundant at the Senate polls last year which he had cast as an MNA. According to the ECP, Vawda had submitted a doctored affidavit while submitting his nomination papers at the time of general elections four years ago.

It is pertinent to mention here that Vawda has been disqualified under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution, which effectively means that he will no longer be able to participate in the elections again.

The Chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto tweeted the news and wrote “One more PTI wicket down”.
