ANKARA/DIYARBAKIR: On Monday, an earthquake of 7.9 magnitude jolted North-West Syria and Central Turkiye. Several buildings collapsed in the region; as a result, many people died, hundreds got injured, and a number of survivors are stuck under the wreckage. The effects of the earthquake were also felt in Lebanon and Cyprus.
According to the disaster agency of Turkiye, 76 people have lost their lives and 440 people are injured in earthquake. Rescue teams have declared a ‘Level 4 Alarm’, which is a call for international assistance. Supply aircraft also started operations around the city of Kahramanmaras.
German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) provided the details of the earthquake’s origin. GFZ stated that the earthquake originated at a six miles depth near Kahramnmaras (a southern region of Turkey). Meanwhile, the EMSC monitoring service evaluated the risk of a tsunami.

Governor of Sanliurfa (South-Eastern province of Turkiye), Salih Ayhan, requested people to move to safer locations. Turkish Red Cross also directed people to evacuate damaged houses.
State media of Syria and Hama Civil Services reported that several buildings collapsed in Aleppo. Residents of Damascus – Syria, and Beirut & Tripoli – Lebanon, took shelter in their cars.
