Scientists in shock; days become shorter as Earth’s rotation speed increases

According to a new research by the National Physical Laboratory of the United Kingdom, the spinning speed of Earth has increased compared to what it was a half-century ago. The days have become shorter as on June 29, the Earth completed a full rotation 1.59 milliseconds earlier, making it the shortest day recorded.

According to scientists, the increasing speed may lead to removing one second from atomic clocks. A team of scientists, including Leonid Zotov, Nikolay Sidorenkov and Christian Bizouard, claimed that disruption in the rotation of Earth could be the result of Chandler Wobble, which has a normal amplitude of 3m to 4m but disappeared between 2017 and 2020.

Few experts said that refreezing and melting ice caps might be the reason for the irregular speed of Earth.
