Senate leader Yousuf Raza Gilani resigns from his post

Opposition leader of the Senate Yousuf Raza Gilani has resigned from his post during the upper house session on Monday. The former prime minister was one of the missing members on Friday’s session, allowing the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf to pass the State Bank of Pakistan’s Amendment Bill.

Gilani said that the silence of his well-wishers had astonished him. He said that those criticising him voted in favour of the government enabling the government to secure the bill. He added that his resignation had already been submitted to the party.

The controversial amendment bill got passed despite the opposition having a clear majority. Eight opposition leaders, including Gilani, missed the session. The government also got a favour from the Dilawar Khan group.

Earlier, on November 19, the government was able to pass through four bills with the support of the same group.
