Wheat crisis in Pakistan; Food ministry blames hoarders for shortage of wheat

The Ministry of Food Security has claimed that influential people have stockpiled over 4 million tonnes of wheat, and the country is now facing a shortage of wheat by 4.5 million tonnes. According to a report by the food ministry, the wheat crisis has intensified across the country.

The report added that common citizens are facing problems to attain the basic food commodity, but the profiteers have made over two billion rupees while the hoarders have made Rs30 billion profit by stockpiling wheat reserves. The ministry of food further added that the provinces could not achieve the wheat procurement target of 21 per cent.

Regarding wheat smuggling, the report stated that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government failed to halt the smuggling of wheat. The report claimed that six lakh tonnes of wheat were smuggled to Afghanistan through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
