Vegetable prices increase as monsoon affects crops in Sindh and Balochistan

KARACHI: The rain-induced disasters have started to affect the prices of vegetables. Downpours and floods have destroyed crop fields across Sindh and Balochistan. Subsequently, the supply chain got disconnected, and resultantly, the prices are now surging.

According to the current rate, Onion has hiked to Rs140 per kg from Rs120 per kg. Similarly, the rate of Okra jumped to Rs170 per kg from Rs160 per kg. Tomato is selling at Rs160 per kg. Spinach at Rs250 per kg, and Garlic at Rs320 per kg. Meanwhile, brinjal or eggplant has also surged to Rs150 per kg.

Earlier, the Minister of Environment in Sindh Ismail Rahu claimed that the current monsoon system had created a more dangerous situation than the super floods of 2010. He added that crops of cotton, rice, dates, sesame, banana, sugarcane and other products got affected, and the country might face a food shortage.
