TikTok reshaping the business norms for SMBs

TikTok recently held a workshop in Karachi at a private hotel on August 31, aimed at encouraging small and medium businesses (SMBs) to create content on its platform in a bid to grow their businesses. To say that many have already jumped at the opportunity and are now making the most of it would be an understatement.

TikTok remains the only social media platform that is offering unparalleled reach to all its players, allowing SMBs to market their offerings without having to break the bank on their social media spending. While speaking to The Upcut, TikTok’s Head of Content Operations and Marketing in Pakistan, Saif Mujahid said that the platform stood to offer a level-playing field to all the players.

“We help new businesses by offering them more reach and engagement tools since not most of them have the luxury of big budgets. We encourage all such industry players to utilise the power of content to showcase their products and services to potential customers,” commented Saif.

When asked to share some tips for content creation with aspiring content creators cum SMBs, Saif remarked that TikTok encourages originality of the content. “Be your own personality. Don’t follow anybody else. Using the right tools including the captions, hashtags and stickers increases the probability of getting more traction on your content,” he concluded.

That TikTok is encouraging more businesses to focus on their content instead of their marketing budgets speaks volumes about how it prioritises the quality of the content one sees on the app.

The Upcut also had a chance to speak to a popular TikTok Content Creator Zunair Kamboh. For Zunair, TikTok has played a significant role in the growth of his travel agency business.

Zunair, when he started off, used to create travelling vlogs. It was during the Covid-19 pandemic that his content saw an upsurge in the number of views and followers. When asked whether he still faces the challenge of “content creation block” now that he is a successful content creator, he admitted that sometimes despite travelling to other cities and towns, he returns empty-handed.

“Look, content creation block is a real issue. But you’ve got to keep faith in ALLAH. All things work out in the end eventually,” said Zunair.

When asked whether TikTok promises monetary gains to SMBs only, Zunair said that it was not the case. “If you are not looking to start your own business, you can earn via brand endorsements on TikTok,” added Zunair.

TikTok sees a huge potential in the Pakistani market. It is up to the latter to live up to its promise thereby also strengthening the country’s digital economy.
