Taliban government announces to reopen universities by Feb 26

KABUL: The Taliban government has announced to reopen the public universities by February 26. However, they have not provided any update regarding the female students attending the educational organisations.

Higher Education Minister Shaikh Abdul Baqi Haqqani announced the reopening of educational institutions on Sunday. Universities situated in colder areas will reopen on February 26 while the ones in warmer cities will open their doors on February 2.

No update, however, has been provided on females attending the universities. Minister of Culture and Information Zabihullah Mujahid had earlier said that the government wanted to open classes for girls on March 21 – the Afghan New Year.

Earlier, on January 16, a group of women had gathered around the Kabul University to protest for their rights and were fired at with pepper spray by the Taliban forces.

Western powers have already told the Taliban government to rejuvenate female education in order to secure foreign aid and overseas assets.
