Sindh becomes first province of Pakistan to reserve job quota for transgenders

KARACHI: On Monday, Sindh Assembly passed the law to reserve 0.5 per cent of jobs for the transgender community. The jobs will be provided in different departments of the provincial government. Sindh has become the first province to pass a law to reserve jobs for transgenders.

The bill was passed unanimously by the provincial assembly under the Sindh Civil Servants Act 1973. The bill states that transgender people face problems on the socio-political front, economic disparity and are a vulnerable group. It adds that the 0.5 per cent job quota is aimed at empowering them.

A medical board will examine the job applicants, after which the transgender people will be provided jobs in grades 15 and below. According to the 2017 census, Pakistan has 10,418 transgender citizens, and 24pc of them reside in Sindh. Currently, there are 41,000 jobs in various government departments, and 206 will be provided to the transgender community.
