SA forfeit ODI series against Australia; hamper chances of direct qualification for WC’23

In a shocking development on Wednesday morning, Cricket South Africa has decided to forfeit its scheduled One-Day International series against Australia in January. CSA explained that its soon-to-be launched franchise T20 tournament was clashing with the series.

The forfeiting of the ODI series has given Australia crucial 30 points for direct qualification for the next year’s Cricket World Cup. While CSA argues that it would need all its top international players available for the tournament, it has seriously hampered its chances for qualification.

Cricket pundits have argued time and again about the irrelevance of ODI cricket with growing T20 fever. With a top Test nation opting to forfeit an ODI series, risking its entire World Cup campaign, things certainly appear all but over for ODI cricket.
