Russia conducts weapon testing by destroying 1982 satellite

Russia

MOSCOW: Russia carried an armaments drill on Tuesday in which they targeted their inoperative 1982 satellite, Tselina-D. The drill was aimed at testing the effectiveness of the razor-sharp precision of the missile.

The Russian Defence Ministry said that it caused no problems to any space activities.

“We did indeed successfully test a promising system. It hit the old satellite with razor-sharp precision. The fragments that formed pose no threat to space activity,” read the statement.

The US has criticised Russia’s action stating that it was irresponsible and dangerous. State Secretary Anthony Blinken said that the matter would be discussed with its [US] allies as they had no prior information about the activity.

“On November 15, 2021, the Russian Federation recklessly conducted a destructive test of a direct-ascent anti-satellite missile against one of its own satellites,” said the secretary.

The Russian defence ministry, however, believes that the attack caused no threat, and similar activities were carried out by USA, India, and China.
