Former Interior Minister Rehman Malik passes away

ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and former interior minister of Pakistan Rehman Malik passed away in early hours of Wednesday after battling coronavirus for over three weeks. He was 70.

Malik was receiving medical treatment at a private hospital in Islamabad after he contracted Covid-19 last month. After his condition worsened, he was shifted to ventilator. However, he could not recover from the illness. The spokesperson of Rehman, Riaz Ali Turi, tweeted the news.

Malik was a prominent leader of PPP and served as the interior minister from 2008 to 2013. According to his brother, Khalid Malik, the last rites will be completed on Thursday.

President of Pakistan Arif Alvi and the Prime Minister’s Office extended their condolences to the family members and prayed for the deceased.

The current Interior Minister of Pakistan Sheikh Rasheed and Governor Punjab Chaudhry Sarwar also shared condolence messages upon hearing the news.

PPP Senator Sherry Rehman and National Assembly member from PML-N, Ahsan Iqbal, also tweeted their condolences.
